Introduction to Drafting Tables

Posted on: December 5, 2010

A drafting table, also called a drawing table or architect's table, is a specially designed desk aiding design professionals in different aspects of their work - from writing to sketching to drawing up blueprints. They are recognizable by their large desk surface that is set on hinges of some kind so the surface angle can be tilted from horizontal to nearly vertical. They will also include special lips to hold writing materials when in the upright position. Any when extended to its full upright position, they effectively can function as easels, perfect for presenting material. In that position, they also act as standing desks should the designer prefer to think on his or her feet!

Drafting tables will have special design elements allowing for different tools to be easily and securely attached, such as parallel rulers, magnifying glasses, compasses and protractors.

Older drafting tables were constructed using wood, though that is not to say there aren't very fine and technically advanced modern models that incorporate handsome wood accents. Modern tables are typically made of some form of metal allowing them to be a bit stronger and more portable should that need arise. Also, metal more easily allows for the incorporation of machinery to aid in lifting and lowering the tables, which can be quite heavy.

Some models include multiple tables, each having their own adjustment mechanisms. These split-level table styles are particularly useful when one portion needs to be kept flat for a laptop, for instance, while the other raised to show off design work.

Good drafting tables are precision instruments that aid in highly technical design work. Though computer-based design is now a standard medium for design work, there still are things best handled with paper, pencil and technical tools, which means drafting tables continue to be standard equipment for any serious designer.
